Singing the Lord's praises is just part of what motivates the
members of the Tribe of Levi (TOL). Ministry is at the core of their mission, as they use their gifts and talents in
the service of the Almighty. The group derives its name from the old testament Judaic tribe of Israel whose responsibility
it was to lead the singing, and play the musical instruments, both in worship and battle, as well as tend to the priestly
duties of the temple. It was the Levites who carried the sacred Arc of the Covenant.
The members of TOL come
from various religious and musical backgrounds. While the individuals in the TOL attend Baptist, Catholic, Adventist and non-denominational
churches, the TOL members all serve one Lord. It is this service and the TOL's dedication to musical excellence
that bring them together, to skillfully use their talents to minister to the Lord, congregations and audiences everywhere.
The diverse backgrounds of the TOL have afforded them opportunities to perform with conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Zubin
Mehta, Claddio Abbado, Robert Shaw, Leonard Bernstein,Roland Carter,Nathan Carter,Moses Hogan,Quincy Jones, and with artists
from Jessye Norman and Barbara Hendricks to Ashford & Simpson, Take 6 and Brian McKnight.
The TOL members have toured
nationally and internationally.
The Tribe of Levi has performed with Carla Harris, Danny Coakley, Cynthia Goodloe
Palmer, and in November 2005 were one of the featured choral ensembles that performed as part of the New York Historical Society's
Slavery in New York exhibition. June 2007 found TOL singing a benefit cincert for Habitat for Humanity.
Using
various musical genres, under the direction of founder/director M. Roger Holland,II, the TOL, like the biblical Levites, seeks
to skillfully usher people into God's presence.
